We process a lot of returns, and our team regularly needs to charge a restocking fee. Most of the time a percentage makes sense (e.g., 15% on a fridge), but sometimes a flat dollar amount is more fair and easier to explain (e.g., $50 on a low-cost accessory). Right now we have to choose one type globally, which boxes us in and creates extra back-and-forth or manual overrides.
Here’s a real example:
A $2,000 range comes back with light packaging damage. A 10–15% fee is appropriate and consistent. Later that day, a $120 accessory is returned unopened—the same 15% would be $18, which doesn’t cover handling, but charging $50 flat would. We need both options available so we can choose what fits the situation without changing settings every time.
What would help us:
In settings, let us enable both fee types: a predetermined percentage and a flat dollar amount.
If a percentage is enabled, allow an option to mark it as Locked (exact %) or Minimum locked (reps can increase the % but not go below the minimum).
When creating a return, the Order Return screen should show the available options and let us choose Percentage or Flat $ for that return. Show the fee calculation live so the rep and customer can see what’s being applied.
A small info tooltip explaining how the fee is calculated would reduce confusion.
Please keep an audit trail of setting changes (who changed the fee options and when), so managers can review if needed.
Please update Returns so we can enable both percentage and flat dollar restocking fees in settings, choose the right one on each return with clear, real-time calculations, support “locked” or “minimum locked” percentages, and log any setting changes for accountability.
