🐞 Problem
Currently, when clients upload inventory via CSV, the system requires a serial number field to be populated. This requirement is enforced both in validation and in the downloadable CSV template.

Brooklawn has decided not to track or input serial numbers for their inventory. While this was discussed and advised against, they are firm in their decision and do not want serial numbers included due to the added workload and lack of perceived value for their operation.

At this time, the system does not allow inventory uploads without serial numbers, which blocks their workflow.

⚠️ Why is this a problem?

• Forces a workflow that some dealers intentionally choose not to follow

• Creates unnecessary friction and manual work for dealers who do not track serial numbers

• Prevents inventory uploads entirely for dealers who opt out of serial tracking

• Reduces flexibility in accommodating different dealer inventory practices

While serial numbers are strongly recommended for traceability, loss prevention, and downstream processes, requiring them universally is limiting adoption and usability.

✅ Solution

• Remove the hard requirement for serial numbers during inventory CSV uploads

• Provide two downloadable CSV templates:

  1. Inventory CSV with Serial Numbers (Recommended)

  2. Inventory CSV without Serial Numbers

• Add a clear notification or callout during the upload and/or template download process that:

  • Strongly recommends using serial numbers

  • Explains the benefits of serial tracking (inventory accuracy, service, reporting, accountability)

• Allow successful inventory uploads regardless of whether the serial number field is included, based on the chosen template

This approach preserves best practices while respecting dealer-specific operational decisions and removes a blocker to inventory ingestion.
